It is essential to take advantage of emerging technology in academic research, especially when it improves our research and understanding of the past. For many years, archaeology has continued with conventional practices due to the high cost and accessibility of remote sensing technology. However, thanks to Moore’s Law, technology rapidly gets smaller and cheaper over time. With the widespread growth of laser scanning and photogrammetry in archaeology, researchers are quickly discovering how this technology can help our investigations of the past.

Over the last year, through the collaboration of the University of Bonn and the University of Stuttgart, these new methods have been carried out at the Maya site of Uxul in Campeche, Mexico. From small objects to entire architectural groups, laser scanning and photogrammetric mapping was completed in only a few weeks, yet the amount and quality of data collected was impressive. This presentation will not only illustrate our work in the field but also how the data collected can be visualised in unique ways to help archaeologists, epigraphers, and their students continue to investigate this remote site as well as contributing directly to public education as part of an upcoming museum exhibition.
